Yes,I had this wonderful, broad education. But the truth is when I graduated from Stanford University,I was a medieval history and philosophy student. And it absolutely gave me great skills in thinking and great perspective.
But it also made me completely unemployable.
And, so, I went off to law school because ;you would expect from the story I just told you my dad wanted me to be a lawyer like him.
I was there for about a semester and discovered I really hated it So I had to make what was for me the first tough choice as an adult,I had to decide to disappoint my parents. Because it occurred to me at that point that pleasing someone else wasn’t a sustainable life’s goal. And it also occurred to me at that point that if I didn’t really love what I was doing and have passion for what I was doing then I wouldn’t be successful, whatever I did. So I quitted law school. And now I was of course even more unemployable.
So I had to pay the bill, and had to pay the rents, so I went to work, doing only the thing I knew how to do to make money.
I became a secretary. I typed, I filed, and I answered the phones. And I didn't think the job was beneath me. I hope I learned a lot from that job. What it feels like at the bottom of the totem pole and how people who are at the bottom of the totem pole can contribute.
But I also learnt something important about leadership. Two men, after I had been there about 6 months, two men came to me and said, “You know we've been watching you. And we think maybe you could do something more than type and file. How would you like to help us write deals and learn a little bit about what we do everyday ?” And believe it or not, it was the first time it ever occurred to me that maybe business was a career. I didn’t even think terms of (careers at that point. I just more thought about it in terms of that, gee, maybe someday I would get an MBA, which ultimately I did. But the reason that taught me about the important lessons about leadership is because these two men saw possibilities. And they helped me see possibilities that I didn't know were there. They gave me opportunities because they saw potential and provided tools and support. I think that’s what leadership is all about.
Leadership is about seeing possibilities. It’s about giving opportunities to people so that they can realize those possibilities. And fundamentally I think that’s what this institution is all about, which is why I have such respect for it I think what this institution all about is giving people the opportunities and the tools they need to actually realize possibilities, and in the process perhaps to have people see some possibilities they have not seen before.

1)occur to:如果某人突然想起或意识到什么东西,可以用it occurs to someone...
4)MBA:“Master of Business Administration”

毫无疑问,她学到了很多优秀的思考技能和思维方法,然后话题一转说:“But it also made me completely unemployable.
(2)it occurred to me at that point...
(3)pleasing someone else wasn't a sustainable life’s goal
(5)believe it or not看似意思模棱两可,其实却相当明确。
